SH2-96 at the edge of the Supernova remnant

Supernova Remnants are always an interesting, yet demanding target for observation. Due to their large extent in the sky, these often imaged using a smaller focal length to capture the complete object.

In this case I focused on a rather small section of SNR G65.3+5.7, which highlights the edge of ionized oxygen which separates this frame diagonally. Ionized clouds of Hydrogen form the red part on the left and has the catalog number SH2-96. It seems to resemble a flame dancing on a blue ocean.

These objects are the result of a supernova which happens at the end of the regular life of most stars, when the fusion of lighter elements can no longer sustain the radiation required to keep the star from collapsing.

With the collapse a huge amount of energy is set free and, similar to an explosion, large quantities of matter is ejected from the dying star. In most cases a sharp edge is formed, which is showed in detail here:

SNR G65.3+5.7 is a rather dim object and first identified in 1977 as a supernova remnant. The supernova event happened about 27500 years ago in a distance of 3200 lightyears and extended to a diameter of about 230 lightyears in that timeframe.

Imaging supernova remnants is primarily collecting narrowband data in Hydrogen Alpha and Oxygen 3 wavelengths, maybe some R/G/B for the star colors. In this case I decided to spend integration time on broadband too, as that region also contains some IFN.

And finally another crop from a more ruptured edge:
